The city council voted 6-2 this week to establish designated food truck zones in the downtown business district.
Starting next month, mobile vendors must obtain special permits and operate only in approved locations and only during the following specified time periods: 11 A.M.-2 P.M.and 5 P.M.-8 P.M. Monday through Friday.
Council member Janet Torres said the regulations balance support for small businesses with concerns from brick-and-mortar restaurants.
Food trucks must also meet enhanced sanitation requirements and carry additional insurance.
The new rules take effect September 1 with a 30-day grace period for compliance.
