We’ve been discussing the impact of urbanization on global ecosystems. Because of the expansion of cities and their surrounding suburbs, some scientists believe that immediate and drastic measures must be taken to prevent further damage to delicate ecosystems and vulnerable plants and animals living there. Others think that more realistic approaches to preservation are better. Which approach do you think is more effective in combating climate change?

I think we need to act quickly and boldly to protect vulnerable plant and animal populations from urbanization. Urbanization is already destroying ecosystems and causing the extinction of various species so waiting could make things worse. Taking strong, immediate steps to save our flora and fauna and protect their habitats is the best way to make a real difference.

Urbanization is necessary for growing communities and improving quality of life. If we focus too much on preservation, we risk slowing down the type of progress that helps more people access essential amenities such as housing and clean water. While protecting nature matters, cities drive innovation and economic development, making them essential for adapting to an expanding population.
